Tour a $8.4M Estate Along the Hudson River Once Owned by One of New York’s Most Prominent Families

Along the Hudson River, a 34.5-acre estate once belonging to the Livingston family is for sale in Kingston, New York. They were prominent in the political and social scenes in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, with one of them even signing the Declaration of Independence and one serving as the first Chancellor of New York. The Astors were some of their descendants, so, needless to say, they weren’t scant on properties or wealth. This was among the Livingston family’s 30 or so mansions they once held in the area.

The historic main house dates back to 1860 and has been wonderfully maintained and refreshed over the years. Rich hues fill the home: A red kitchen, yellow laundry room, blue pantry. Personality comes through in other ways, too. Wallpapered spaces include a blue-and-white patterned office, a blue-and-red striped guest room, and a floral bedroom. It’s spacious as well. Across 6,900 square feet of charming living space, the residence totals six bedrooms and seven bathrooms.

The sprawling estate also includes an 1800s red barn, which can be used as a garage today but also still houses original horse-drawn carriage equipment ideal for history buffs. There are two additional structures on the grounds: An original one-bedroom cottage called “the Gatehouse” and a mid-century style cabin called “the Playhouse” with a living space, kitchenette, full bathroom, and gym.

Outside, from rolling wildflower meadows to centuries-old trees, walking trails, and a pebble beach, nature also makes a strong impression. A wrap-around porch is ideal for enjoying peaceful moments overlooking the river, while a gunite swimming pool awaits those who want to splash or swim laps to escape the summer heat.

For those interested in owning a slice of history, Raj Kumar of Sotheby’s International Realty holds the $8.35 million listing.
