From a TV Art Director to a Celebrated Architect: Rare James H. McNaughton Estate Wants $4.85M

Palm Springs has no shortage of stunning mid-century homes, but this one feels straight out of a Slim Aarons photo. That’s because it was designed by Hollywood set designer turned architect James H. McNaughton. McNaughton was ABC’s first official art director before turning his eye to architecture. He designed fewer than two dozen commissioned homes, so this 1967 residence is exceptionally rare.

Dubbed the Martin Lipton residence, this 5,633-square-feet estate houses five bedrooms and five bathrooms, and sits on just over half an acre, welcoming stunning views of the San Jacinto Mountains.

Even though its construction took place nearly six decades ago, much of the home’s original character remains untouched. Seemingly ahead of its time, floor-to-ceiling glass walls line the interiors, complemented by terrazzo flooring and beautiful 12-foot windows. The central courtyard catches the eye with a rectangular pool, fountains, and spa. With colorful furnishings, marble finishes, and a striking fireplace indoors, the touches all reflect McNaughton’s colorful and theatrical vision.

“This isn’t a contemporary take on 1960s Palm Springs. The experience is already here,” offers listing agent John Nelson.

The property is listed with John Nelson and Cat Moe of the Nelson Moe Group at Compass.
