Inside a Tech Billionaire’s Magazine-Worthy Former Bay Area Estate Priced at $35M

Just east of Oakland in Alamo, California, a residence designed to perfection has hit the market. Situated on over 21 acres, Fieldhaven is a French-style masterpiece sat between the Las Trampas Ridge and Diablo Range. Priced at $35 million, it shouldn’t be a surprise that a billionaire previously owned the prized pad.

Billionaire David Duffield, founder of both PeopleSoft and Workday, created the stunning chalet-style home from scratch sparing no expense. Duffield took Workday public in 2012, and sold PeopleSoft to Oracle in 2005, according to a profile by Forbes. The deals certainly gave him immense pocket money, as Duffield spent $135 million on the construction of Fieldhaven over 3.5 years. Including time for design and planning, bringing Fiedhaven to life actually took a total of seven years to achieve.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Duffield sold the property in 2020 for $19 million to another big business name, J. Taylor Crandall, founder of Oak Hill Capital. All the proceeds of the sale were donated to Maggie’s Fund, a no-kill pet shelter in the East Bay founded and dedicated in memory of the family’s dog.

Now enough about the home’s story, and onto the home itself! The 23,314-square-foot manse was designed by Remick Associates Architects + Master Builders. It features warm woodwork, intricate chandeliers, and grounding stone choices throughout. Despite the grandeur of its gargantuan rooms and high ceilings, the inviting mix of organic, woodsy materials makes the overall atmosphere feel cozy and comforting.

Encompassing a total of 10 bedrooms and 22 bathrooms, there’s certainly space for everyone, especially with the holidays coming up. Additional amenities in the home include a guest house, wine cellar, and theater. To Crandall’s delight, there was a 20+ car barn with lifts to accommodate his car collection.

“Fieldhaven is a true masterpiece, a world of its own,” said listing agent Taso Tzakos of Engel & Völkers. “The estate is peaceful and private, with understated luxury at every turn.” Marilee Headen of Compass is also representing the listing.
