Late PBS Broadcaster Robert MacNeil’s Charming Upper West Side Co-Op Is Up for Sale

The longtime Upper West Side home of the late Robert MacNeil has come to market asking $5.5 million. The Emmy Award-winning journalist was the co-founder and co-anchor of the “Robert MacNeil Report,” which eventually became “PBS News Hour.” Last April, MacNeil passed away at the age of 93 and now his children are handling the sale.

Co-op purchases used to be private, so the exact year MacNeil picked this charming home up has been approximated to be 1998. It sits in a distinguished structure at West 77th Street. The Studio Building went up in 1907 and was designed by architectural firm Harde & Short, known for their facades with Beaux-Arts details. As if the architecture isn’t enchanting enough, the building is just a block from Central Park and across the street from the American Museum of Natural History.

Inside, a semi-private elevator landing leads to the nine-room unit. The original charm and character of the spread is still in tact: Leaded glass windows on the interior front door, a windowed gallery, a rosewood paneled dining room, and a wood-burning fireplace. For those looking to create a space that is theirs and don’t mind putting some work in, this is an ideal opportunity as there are definitely updates a potential buyer may want to make. The kitchen could benefit from a makeover, as could the bathrooms, but all the good bones are there.

Apt for entertaining, the front of the home includes a foyer, gallery, living room, and dining room. A staff bedroom is located near the kitchen and laundry area. There are three additional bedrooms, including the primary suite, and a total of two-and-a-half bathrooms.

Leslie O’Shea and Stacey Dolan of Brown Harris Stevens represents the late journalist’s apartment.
