Old Hollywood Actress Bette Davis’s Former Home Along the Coast of Maine Seeks $15M

Worlds away from the spotlight in Hollywood, Bette Davis retreated to this waterfront estate in Maine—and it is now on the market for $15 million. The Old Hollywood actress, famous for her roles in All About Eve and Jezebel, and her fellow-actor husband Gary Merrill lived at this Cape Elizabeth property in the 1950s, according to Architectural Digest, and cherished it thoroughly.

The famous couple dubbed the 7,600-square-foot main house “Witch Way,” while they called it home. Of course, a new owner can name it whatever they want, just as the famous stars did. The residence boasts coastal charm, from its shingle-style exterior and thoughtfully landscaped front walkway to its grand staircase and large rooms. The vast lawn is a peaceful environment for solitude—and equally perfect for a large tent for gatherings and entertaining. It totals five bedrooms, four full bathrooms, and two half-baths.

Also on the seven-acre property, there is also a carriage house suitable for guests with its own kitchen, two bedrooms, and two bathrooms. With 1,184 feet of ocean frontage, there’s no shortage of views nor windows to take them in: Balconies, French doors, and natural light are aplenty.

Bill Gaynor and Sam Michaud of Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Realty hold the storied New England listing. A representative for the listing agency shares, “Gary lobstered off the backyard. He said the best times in his life had been spent with Bette and their children at Witch Way.”
