Deeds & Don'ts: $mart Celeb$

Stars: They’re just like us, right? (Oops, wrong magazine.) Unlike mere mortals, bold-faced names can really bolster their bank accounts simply by unloading a premier property. Julia Stiles recently did so, pocketing $2.7 million for her three-bedroom duplex with two wood-burning fireplaces at 310 East 15th Street (she purchased it a decade ago for $1.995 million). In SoHo, Jonah Hill’s full-floor Howard Street loft was recently listed for $12,000 a month; it boasts 13-foot ceilings and a fireplace, but no doorman expecting a holiday tip. A few blocks away, Kirsten Dunst’s Canal Street penthouse has just been snapped up by a new tenant.

Elegant Design Complements Art and Personal Collections to Make This House a Home

A decade ago when a Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum board member went shopping for a weekend getaway, adequate display space for her impressive art collection wasn’t uppermost in her mind. She had a New York apartment for that, so small and cozy was just fine. While the 1920s Colonial Revival she settled on may not have been her dream house (“It had no moldings, no charm, and I really didn’t love it,” she says), she purchased it anyway planning to give it some character and enjoy it as a retreat.

For Designer Campion Platt, a Humble Bungalow on the Water Is the Key to Summertime Fun

Most people would guess that the home of an architect and interior designer is always the biggest and baddest on the block. Not so when it comes to Campion Platt. Nestled in a neighborhood of iron-gated fortresses in the heart of Water Mill, the waterfront bungalow that he shares with his wife, Tatiana, and their three children is anything but amped up. “We’re the last holdouts,” he says. “We’re like the Clampetts!”

Spa Sampler

Every summer some spas from around the world come to New York and set up exhibits and demonstrations to give members of the media examples of the services they offer. This month we stopped by Gotham Hall and explored.

Your Fairs Lady

People who made a New Year’s resolution to augment their collections of art and antiques had the chance to attend a series of fairs held every January. The fairs gave dealers a chance to show off precious paintings and decorative arts. I had a chance to stop by several of them. Here are some highlights I found among all the booths, if you missed the shows this year, mark your calendars for attendance in 2014

Go See

Internationally influential iconic art by Andrew Wyeth, an heiress’s Oriental palace, and a film about a splintered family dynasty are enticing audiences in New York City. Here are two exhibits and a film you might want to go see.
