A North Shore Home Gets a Luxe Makeover With a Speakeasy Basement, Chef’s Kitchen, and Resort-Worthy Backyard

When their two children became teenagers, this North Shore couple was ready for the next phase of life. They didn’t want to move, thanks to deep community ties and a convenient location to all of their family activities, so they tapped West Hempstead builders Old World Quality Corp. to gut the house down to the studs, add a basement extension, build a pool house and patio, and create a customized layout poised to grow into the family’s next era.

Project Manager Mike Vigliotti recommended Margali & Flynn Designs of Williston Park to tackle the interiors. “Their home is the hub for entertaining family and friends,” explains Founder Kerith Flynn, who created the design with her daughter, Assistant Designer Delaney Flynn. “They always have friends over—it’s the outdoor place in the summer, and the husband, a movie buff, wanted to have a super cool basement for entertaining all of their friends in the wintertime.”

While the wife’s softer, more neutral sensibilities dominates the main floor plan, the basement boasts a New York City speakeasy vibe, home to such contrasts as graphic Philip Jeffries wallpaper and a full-sized Storm Trooper. But what really brings the space to the next level are the dozens of appliances concealed throughout. The theater’s concession stand space houses Sub-Zero Refrigerator Drawers for beverages, while the bar (inspired by Kerith’s stay at Adare Manor in Ireland) boasts a Sub-Zero French Door Refrigerator, Cove Dishwasher, and a Wolf Built-In Oven, Warming Drawer, and Microwave.

It is only rivaled by the jewel box upstairs kitchen, which has two concealed Sub-Zero Refrigerators plus Refrigerator Drawers, a Wolf Rangetop, Double Oven, Warming Drawer, and Microwave, and two Cove Dishwashers. “There are a lot of refrigerators, but when you have two teenagers with all their friends and all the snacks and beverages, it makes sense,” Kerith adds. The designer and homeowners spent hours roaming the Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove Showroom in Roslyn Heights. “It was a long list of appliances, and it kept growing. The couple was so inspired and kept seeing things they loved, so the team at the showroom played a really big role in the selection.”

If his masculine basement got a bar and a concession stand, then why not undercounter wine storage for her in the pink “glam” room? “She has the refrigerator filled with Champagne and rosé—why wouldn’t you have a glass while you’re getting your hair done?” Kerith notes, adding, “It’s every girl’s dream.”

Margali & Flynn deftly balanced the tension between the home’s masculine and feminine spaces. The master bedroom and her glam room feature a soft pink color palette, layers of velvety texture, and lighting and accessories reminiscent of jewelry. His office, meanwhile, is centered by a large piece of custom tiger artwork by celebrity tattoo artist Mike Rubendahl and a striking architectural chandelier. The space had to be masculine, yet elegant for hosting meetings or offering clients a drink. Of course, it was fitted with a full bar, Sub-Zero Beverage Center, and Refrigerator Drawers.

Communal spaces, meanwhile, favored a more neutral palette that felt bright, elegant, and dressy without being overly formal. Cue the oversized Century sectional sofa in the living room that can fit a crowd. The same went for the landscape outdoors, which features a classic coastal aesthetic. The renovated pool house and massive Wolf 42-inch Gas Grill are poised for hosting barbecues, all summer long.

“They do a lot of sharing and entertaining and hosting, and they love doing it,” Kerith adds. “They had a very private spot and decided they were going to do what they wanted with it. And that was really fun.”

What they wanted to do, as it turned out, was create an array of hubs for entertainment tailored to him, her, and the whole family throughout the house, made possible by the next-level Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove appliances throughout.
