Spa Sampler

Every summer some spas from around the world come to New York and set up exhibits and demonstrations to give members of the media examples of the services they offer. This month we stopped by Gotham Hall and explored.

Abbreviated manicures, mini facials and back massages are some of the treatments members of the press are invited to try. I ended up participating in four treatments for my arms.

At the booth set up by Umsted, a North Carolina spa resort near Raleigh-Durham, the Cherry Blossom process involves exfoliating and then massaging the area with a soothing lotion.

In three parts, the skin treatment at Aspira, north of Milwaukee, involves a linden-honey concoction. The full treatment includes a massage, facial and mask, which take over two hours at the spa.

A thorough arm massage from the spa at the Regent Palms in Turks and Caicos left my arms feeling smooth and invigorated. The Irish seaweed balms they use are 100 perecent organic.

Finally a technician from the Kohler Spa in Wisconsin gently brushed my skin, then massaged it with a Farmhouse Fresh Mellow Yellow shea butter, and finally smoothed heated stones gently up and down my arms.

In addition to the treatments I tried, I stopped by various booths to chat with representatives of other spas. Here are some tidbits of information I picked up:

Canyon Ranch has opened a Canyon Ranch Club at the Omni Hot Springs Hotel in Virginia. In addition to hiking, tennis and other outdoor sports offered at the resort, guests participated in signature Canyon Ranch activities. Teenagers and young adults are welcome to attend.

Travaasa, just outside Austin, Texas, invites guests to bicycle up a smoothie!  Pedaling swirls a blender attached to a stationary bike and the result is a healthy concoction.

Spa food that’s healthy and delicious is being cooked up at Miraval. A new cookbook from the resort contains recipes for the likes of salmon crostini and chocolate mint meringue cookies.

The spa at the Maui Four Seasons Hotel offers a hydro peptide anti-aging facial, which claims to rebuild underlying collagen.

The Omphoy in Palm Beach Florida is one of the luxury resorts offering Babor skin treatments with ingredients manufactured by the firm that designs the treatments.
