Nowhere in the world is real estate sexier—even for George Clooney, arguably one of the sexiest men alive—than in the Hamptons. The former Hamptons hot spot sold for $19 million to Discovery Land Company CEO Mike Meldman, who also co-owns Casamigos Tequila with Clooney and his pal Rande Gerber, husband of supermodel Cindy Crawford.
In Rio de Janeiro, anyone out and about at 4 a.m. is more than likely still up from the night before. But not me. I woke up bright and early to make it to the city’s iconic Christ the Redeemer statue by sunrise. Now, at the top of Corcovado Mountain, with the arms of the soaring, stone-carved Jesus stretched out above me, I watch the city come alive more than 2,000 feet below.
Realtors report that the heart of the home has to function as just that: a space to gather for family meals (sorry, dining room), entertain, do homework, watch movies, hang out and, oh yes, prepare food. The most common complaint about the kitchens in older homes is that they were designed as remote rooms for cooks and servants—a la Downton Abbey—with no connection to where family life is lived. So topping the “ideal kitchen” list is an easy flow into a family or great room, a formal dining room, preferably with a butler’s pantry, and doors that open onto a terrace for al fresco dining.
When Schuyler and Charlie Hinnant were looking for inspiration for their new waterfront home in Rowayton, they didn’t have far to go: The building was once a working oyster house, one of several that lined the Five Mile River. “We wanted to keep it true to itself and focus on the oyster theme,” says Schuyler. Located in the historic Oysterman’s Row, the home sits next to the community dock, where a flotilla of kayaks and paddleboards rests on the rocky beach.
“A home in the Hamptons”: It’s a fraught phrase. To the uninitiated, the East End is a wonderland of famous folks and captains of industry. To aspirational types, becoming a homeowner in the Hamptons means joining the in-crowd and reaching a pinnacle that’s beyond the grasp of mere mortals. But it doesn’t stop there.
There was a time when Bobby Van’s was home to regular customers like Truman Capote, James Jones, and George Plimpton; artists like Willem de Kooning rode around town on a Royce Union three-speed bicycle; playwrights like Wendy Wasserstein penned The Heidi Chronicles in a Bridgehampton carriage house; and Jackson Pollock traded paintings for food at the Springs General Store.
