Faithful readers of my Editor’s Letter know I am a huge fan of Nantucket. For more than 20 years, we have traveled to “the faraway island” for a relaxing summer vacation. But I love the island in any season. The Christmas Stroll is great and the fall season is just wonderful. The crowds are gone, the sun is warm and so is the ocean! Start your day in town and browse the shops (I love Erica Wilson, Nantucket Looms and Vis a Vis). After your Black Card has suffered some damage, head to the beach. Cisco’s waves are legendary and Dionis offers a gentle swim.

And after this strenuous day, no place could be more relaxing than Topper’s at the Wauwinet. At the head of the harbor and just steps to the Atlantic over the dunes, sits the island’s premier resort. Topper’s, its award-winning restaurant, offers a dining experience not to be missed.  We enjoyed oysters (harvested 300 yards from the hotel!), lovely local vegetables, butter-poached lobster that couldn’t be fresher and melting short ribs. Desserts are peerless (think homemade ice creams, velvety chocolate and hazelnut treats and a delectable cheese course). And did I mention the wines? Treat yourself to Pol Roger’s Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill Champagne. Jaffelin Mazis-Chambertin “Hospices de Beaune” brought back memories of my spring trip to France.  And Leeuwin Estate’s Margaret River Chardonnay is a favorite of mine too. And one could never forget to dream under a star-filled sky with the ocean crashing nearby. Nantucket never disappoints. www.wauwinet.com/toppersrestaurant.com
