An 1883 Boston Townhouse by Noted Architect Gridley J. F. Bryant Asks $3.7M

A piece of Boston architectural history is looking for its next owner. Built around 1883 by prominent 19th-century architect Gridley J. F. Bryant, this South End residence has hit the market for $3.695 million.

The red-brick Victorian was restored by its current owner, antiques dealer François Baronet, who preserved original details including the wooden staircase, skylight, dormer windows and sloped black slate roof. Baronet’s eye for antiques extends inside, where rare artworks, lighting and antique furnishings complement the home’s historic architecture.

“Much of the original craftsmanship remains intact inside 2 Pelham Terrace,” says Manny Sarkis, co-founder and COO of The Sarkis Team at Douglas Elliman. “Bryant’s original hardwood floors run throughout the top three floors and were carefully refinished, and the original staircase was fully restored.”

The restoration also preserved original millwork throughout the home and the library’s original fireplace surround. Two additional fireplaces were updated with antique French marble surrounds imported from Burgundy, adding another layer of history to the interiors.

Bryant’s legacy stretches well beyond this South End residence. His work helped shape 19th-century Boston and includes Boston Old City Hall, Boston City Hospital and major additions to the Massachusetts State House.

Now ready for its next chapter, with Manny Sarkis of The Sarkis Team at Douglas Elliman.
