Interior designer Todd Gildred just listed his family’s longtime Lake Tahoe sanctuary for a steep $18 million. The off-grid generational compound, which he fondly called his family’s “summer camp” in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, dates back to 1934 and is newly available for the first time in 40 years.
Gildred’s parents acquired the property in 1985 for under $1 million and made it completely self-sustainable with solar energy, generator-powered electricity, and water from the lake. The residence includes a three-bedroom main house, a boat lodge inspired by Gildred’s love of classic mahogany speedboats, a chic studio apartment above the garage, and a one-bedroom cabin known as the “Chicken’s Nest,” which has been featured in national design and lifestyle publications. Around 15 years ago, the designer decided to renovate it all and refreshed the structures with rustic touches, vibrant blues, and organic materials that blend Tahoe’s alpine heritage with polished, contemporary elegance. The chance to see a designer’s personal style and approach to their own cherished home is always a treat.
