Apollo 9, a crucial mission that lead to the first moon landing, was an early expedition that displayed astronauts’ bravery and dedication to space exploration. Russell L (Rusty) Schweickart was one of the legendary astronauts on this mission, and now he’s selling his charming and light-filled residence, which is, of course, earthside. It’s located in the beautiful Sonoma, California and listed for $2.5 million.
Schweickart, who is now 89 years old, served as the lunar module pilot for Apollo 9, which took place from March 3-13, 1969. He logged an astounding 241 hours in space. In his role, he was responsible for testing the portable life support backpack that was subsequently used on the lunar surface explorations, and was a critical piece necessary for the moon landing. Shortly after his journey, he was awarded the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, and later the Federation Aeronautique Internationale De La Vaux Medal in 1970.
The Sonoma, California beauty where he and his wife, Nancy, have resided for the last 25 years presents a cheerful, friendly atmosphere. The yellow exterior immediately signals that. Upon entry, the home gives off an elegant but cozy feel, welcoming individuals with a gracious foyer brightened by the natural light. The window-clad sunroom and upstairs library atop the staircase are a few more examples of the architectural charm that awaits.
The outdoors, however, may be the biggest draw for someone who loves working with soil and earth, rather than having their head up in space. Rusty and Nancy carefully crafted the winding and diverse gardens, which exude classic romance and even an air of cosmic enchantment.
“Our Orangerie was inspired by the grand, antique orangeries of ‘old’ Europe that bring the beautiful outside in and share nature’s beauty all year long. The colors and design of our lovely garden can join the room while the skylights welcome both sun and stars. Then, like magic, it is a perfect space for relaxed reading or streaming. It made the renovation complete and anchors the home into unique comfort,” the sellers shared.
