Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward’s elegant penthouse towering over Central Park has finally changed hands after quite an exciting ride on the market. It listed for the first time in 40 years in December 2024, asking $9.95 million, and it didn’t take long for a fervent bidding war to ensue per the Wall Street Journal. Whoever prevailed then went into contract to finalize the deal, which did take roughly six months. The transaction finally closed recently, revealing that the buyer paid a whopping $14 million for the movie stars’ longtime Carnegie Hill home.
Perched on the 15th floor of 1120 Fifth Avenue, a full-service co-op designed by J.E.R. Carpenter in 1925, the residence embodies classic Upper East Side sophistication. Though it holds just two bedrooms, the interiors feel vast and airy thanks to their immense natural light and calming, neutral tones. But, the most impressive feature of the penthouse has to be the 2,000 square feet of terraces. The new owners can have breakfast each day alfresco or suave cocktail parties all with one of the world’s most iconic parks and skylines in view.
In fact, listing agent Jennifer Stillman shared, “The buyers were drawn to the panoramic views of Central Park and the reservoir, the expansive terraces, the grand layout and all of the well-preserved interior details.”
Stillman and Noble Black of Douglas Elliman held the listing, which was an indisputable real estate success. While Woodward is still living, the couple’s children were the sellers. Newman passed away in 2008, and Woodward was sadly diagnosed with Alzheimer’s that same year.
