A landmarked Upper East Side townhouse that was long the home of Broadway legend David Merrick—known for such productions as “Gypsy,” “Hello Dolly” and “Oliver!”—is asking $19.5M after an extensive renovation.
Merrick lived in the historic East 71st Street home from the mid 1980’s until his death in 2000. His widow sold the place one year later. In 2011, a U.K.-based development and investment company picked it up for $7M and embarked on a multiyear renovation that preserved the landmarked brick and limestone façade while giving the interiors a modern overhaul. Among the modern additions: a striking sculptural staircase that provides an architectural focal point, a 2-story glass atrium and a walnut-finished hydraulic elevator that services all 6 floors. The crowning glory of the home is the 6th-floor roof terrace, which is wind-protected and features a sundeck, hot tub, outdoor shower and wet bar in addition to the breathtaking city views.
Sotheby’s International Realty’s Cathy Taub represents the listing, which was reported by Mansion Global.
