Ellen DeGeneres’s Montecito Midcentury Gem Near the Beach Sells for Over Asking

If the recent reports are true, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have made a big move across the pond to England. For years, the duo has been active in the California real estate scene, however, often making headlines for flip projects or their personal residences in the Santa Barbara/Montecito area. Now, amidst their relocation to the Cotswolds and newfound life as expats, they have been shedding some of their spectacular holdings in the Sunshine State.

In February, their historic Montecito mansion sold for $32 million, according to People, and now a nearby architectural treasure they purchased in 2020 for $2.9 million has changed hands, too.

Built in 1954 and transformed beautifully in 2012, this award-winning bungalow near Butterfly Beach is exactly what many think of when picturing laidback and quietly luxurious L.A. living. Not only is it minutes from the ocean, but the property itself is a paradise with fruit trees and bamboo, outdoor living areas, and unexpected gardens and wandering paths. It almost exudes a Bali-esque feel as well thanks to the gorgeous use of wood and custom mahogany inside and out.

The midcentury modern only has two bedrooms, so it seems more like a getaway for relaxation rather than a destination for large-scale gathering. It has a bright open floor plan, a striking kitchen with Portuguese limestone countertops, and a blissful primary suite with wood-vaulted ceilings.

All of this and more makes it obvious why the home was so hot on the market. Yes, having a famous seller helps, but this place seems to have a bit of magic to it all on its own. The 1,691-square-foot dwelling listed for $4.995 million earlier this month and received multiple offers in the first two days. It closed this week for over asking, reeling in $5.2 million for the celebrity pair.
