Old Hollywood Star Jane Russell’s Former Montecito Oasis Is Up for Sale

Actress Jane Russell came up at the same time as Marilyn Monroe, starring in over 20 films and instantly becoming a sex symbol of the 1940s and 1950s. For example, Russell was a leading lady in hit Old Hollywood movies like “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” alongside Monroe, and “Paleface,” alongside Bob Hope. While she likely lived closer to the major studios during these busy years, she later spent substantial time in the affluent, coastal area of Montecito, owning this midcentury oasis from 1985 to 2000. And, the residence is now up for sale seeking $8.25 million.

Located on a 1.4-acre, tree-filled lot, the main house dates back to the 1950s and was expanded under Russell and her third husband, John Calvin Peoples. According to listing agent Kate Blackwood of Compass, they added the entire second story with Peoples actually building it himself and turning it into their primary suite. The current owners changed the configuration to suit their needs. They have it set up with three bedrooms upstairs and the primary to the main level.

Aesthetically, what you see today is a blend of old and new across the home’s 3,678 square feet of bright interiors. Its midcentury roots are apparent with the strong use of glass, wood, and unique angles while contemporary updates also await. In line with the midcentury architectural movement, connection to nature is also front-of-mind. A new owner can walk out to tree-shaded decks, entertain at the old-school stone BBQ area, lounge by the huge pool, or get active on the sport court. The property also holds its original 1,000-square-foot guest house with one bedroom and a separate studio apartment over the garage.

Famous guests, including Ronald Reagan, are said to have been hosted here during the actress’s ownership. With Montecito still drawing tons of celebrities today, from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to Jennifer Aniston, this compound could become a frequent social hub for whoever buys it next.

Blackwood shares the listing with Santa Van der Larse, who is also with Compass.
