A Splendid Sonoma Modern on Land Once Owned by a High-Society San Francisco Pair Asks $11M

Just north of the Bay Area sits the luxurious towns of Sonoma County and Napa Valley, widely known as California wine country. These areas delight residents and visitors with their picturesque landscapes, top restaurants, and local vineyards. Of course, the homes there are also extremely deluxe. Just look at Ryan Seacrest’s sprawling property listed there. And, recently, a tempting modern right in Sonoma hit the market for $10.95 million.

Originally constructed in 1968 at the peak of the midcentury modern movement, the home remains true to its roots, sleek and boxy, while it has also undergone a stunning restoration. But, as is typical in this part of California, the home is also famed for its land.

The 2.3-acre property was once part of a grand estate owned by Adolph and Alma Spreckels, an early 19th-century high society duo who built a California sugar dynasty. Alma was especially known for her philanthropy and devotion to advancing San Francisco, even earning the nickname of “The Great Grandmother of San Francisco.” And, at their countryside home, she hosted guests like Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, John Barrymore and Gene Tunney, according to an article from Sonoma Magazine.

Today, boasting a 6,200-square-foot retreat, the land is still party-ready yet tranquil. From the gorgeous views of the Sonoma Valley to the natural materials that carry through each room, it’s hard to not feel at peace here. The open concept floor plan moves seamlessly from the light-filled living spaces into the kitchen. There are a spacious seven bedrooms, each with their own en suite.

The true vacation-like feelings come from the outdoors, however, thanks to the 60-foot saltwater pool. Outdoor entertaining seems to be a given as there’s also a fully-equipped outdoor kitchen and pavilion, a fire pit, and a large lawn for croquet. Also on the property is a tennis court and bocce courts.

The only thing this NorCal spread seems to be missing is a vineyard, but that just means one less thing to maintain. Thomas Henthorne of Sotheby’s International Realty holds the lavish listing.
