A Philanthropist’s Prized Penthouse Atop NYC’s Sohmer Piano Building Lists for $25M

The Sohmer Piano Building is one of the most identifiable buildings in the Flatiron District, thanks in part to the outstanding gold domed cupola on the top floor. Even cooler is that the octagonal cupola is part of a private residence, and that penthouse is now on the market seeking $25 million. But, in a heartening twist, all the sale money will be redirected to a philanthropic cause.

The seller of the penthouse is Greg Carr, an entrepreneur and philanthropist. Carr’s nonprofit organization works in the preservation of Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique and supporting the people of its surrounding communities. The money from this sale will be redirected entirely to “his philanthropic project in Mozambique to build infrastructure to create jobs.”

Architect Robert Maynicke designed the Sohmer Piano Building in 1897 for commercial use, but it was developed into luxury residences in the early 2000s. Original building features have been preserved, while the penthouse certainly has a modern freshness to it, too.

Spanning two stories, occupying the 12th and 13th floors, it boasts five bedrooms across almost 5,800 square feet. From the entrance, a magnificent limestone staircase beckons visitors to bask in the light from 40 windows. Skylights, original moldings and wainscotting all contribute to the majestic ambiance of the penthouse. Of course, being in the cupola is the most awe-inspiring vantage point. It captures panoramic views of the city, but looking up is just as enchanting with the dome details above.

Lawrence Treglia and Claire Groome of Sotheby’s International Realty share the listing.
