Coming off of a red hot awards season for his intense indie First Reformed, a film which earned him his first Academy Award nomination in a nearly 50-year career, screenwriter and director Paul Schrader has listed his Chelsea condo. On the market for the first time since he and his wife, actress Mary Beth Hurt, moved in ten years ago, the polished residence is clearly conducive to the creative process and is asking $3.25 million.
As the screenwriter for Martin Scorsese’s hit movies Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, Schrader is no small fish in the movie biz. Perhaps living in spaces filled with light and clean lines is what helps keep him on his game. This sleek screenwriting sanctuary sits in the Modern 23, a boutique condominium building a stone’s throw from the High Line, another great thinking spot for creatives seeking inspiration.Schrader’s condo encompasses 1,912-square-feet, including 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. Brimming with modern luxuries like the key-locked elevator that opens directly to the great room and a gas fireplace, the apartment is no raging bull. In fact, it’s bright rooms are quite relaxing.
Although likely not included in the final sale, a photograph of Schrader and Scorsese can be seen in the listing photos, hanging on a wall just outside of a bedroom that Schrader used as a home office. What does come with the apartment is the legacy of owning a celebrated artist’s former home—as well as deep walk-in closets and a charming balcony off of the master. Curbed first reported the listing, which is with Lois Planco of Compass.
